Cheaper Home Batteries Program

Cheaper Home Batteries Program - What It means For You

A new era in affordable clean energy is coming. From 1 July 2025, the Australian Government will launch the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, a bold $2.3 billion initiative designed to support up to one million homes and small businesses across the country in installing battery storage systems.

As one of the territory’s leading solar specialists, SolarCity NT is here to help you understand what this means—and how you can benefit.

Why This Matters

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program represents one of the most significant national efforts to increase the accessibility of clean, renewable power. By slashing the upfront cost of batteries, this program empowers Territorians to store the excess energy their solar systems produce and use it when they need it most—after sunset or during peak hours.

Key Program Benefits

Around 30% Off Eligible Battery Systems

A government-funded discount to reduce the cost barrier to battery storage.

Greater Energy Independence

Store solar power generated during the day for use at night or during blackouts.

Lower Pressure on the Grid

Help stabilise the power grid and reduce demand on gas-fired generation and costly infrastructure.

Who’s Eligible?

This program is open to households and small businesses across Australia, whether on-grid or off-grid.

To qualify:

  • Battery systems must have a nominal capacity between 5 kWh and 100 kWh.
  • Rebates apply to up to 50 kWh of usable battery storage.
  • Your system must be installed alongside a new or existing solar PV system.
  • Installations must be completed by an accredited battery installer via Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA).
  • Both the battery and inverter must be on the Clean Energy Council’s approved list.

How the Rebate Works

The discount is delivered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) via Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs).

In 2025, the rebate looks like this:

  • 9.3 STCs per kWh of usable battery capacity
  • Equivalent to approximately $372 per kWh
  • Maximum of 50 kWh = up to $18,600 off

This rebate will gradually reduce each year until the program ends in 2030:

Additional Requirements

  • Only one battery system per property is eligible.
  • Electric vehicles are not included in the rebate.
  • For on-grid homes, batteries must be Virtual Power Plant (VPP) capable—but joining a VPP isn’t mandatory.
  • Installations must follow the Best Practice Guide: Battery Storage Equipment.
  • Installers must comply with state/territory electrical safety laws.
  • System owners will receive detailed documentation covering system specs, safety compliance, and energy savings.

What If You Already Have a Battery?

You may still qualify if:

  • Your current system has not previously received this rebate, and
  • You add at least 5 kWh of extra capacity while keeping the total under 100 kWh.

Note: You cannot claim a second rebate for additional capacity if your existing battery has already received support under this program.
